New Teachers - Initial Salary Grid Placement

If you have not already done so, <click here> to link to "Understanding the Salary Grid" - this will provide you with an understanding about how you are paid, the Group Rating statement, and related experience.

Getting your Group Rating Statement from OSSTF

  • Apply to OSSTF for an Initial Group Rating Statement.  Click here to link to the OSSTF Certification Rating application form.  Complete it and return it to OSSTF, as per listed instructions

  • Inform the Board – Human Resources, in writing, that you have applied to OSSTF Certification for an initial Rating Statement. <Click here> to view a sample letter which you should use.

  • Once you receive your OSSTF Group Rating Statement, fax a copy to the Board – Human Resources.  Your pay will be retroactively adjusted to the date of hire given your group as defined on the OSSTF Group Rating Statement

All correspondence not accompanied by an application form are returned and all documentation must be re-submitted with the completed application form. All correspondence is now pre-screened and any missing documentation is requested at this point in time. If the documentation is received before the file is complete, the file will be done in sequence as though the file was initially complete. It normally takes 10 weeks for turn around of applications or re-evaluations plus mailing time once all the materials are in and the file is completed for processing.

Getting your Related Experience

ALL New Teachers (even if you are not or will not be certified by the College of Teachers) to this Board should also be aware that related teaching, professional, or trade experience may be used to increase their salary, for initial grid placement.  You must send this request and accompanying information to Human Resources at the Board Office. <Click here> to view a sample letter which you should use.

Documents Needed:

In order for the Board to assess related experience, the following documents must be gathered, compiled, and copies sent to the Board, as soon as possible:

  • Prior Teaching Experience - a letter from the institution stating length of service (dates), status (full-time etc.), and what you taught.

  • Professional or Trade Experience - a letter from your employer stating length of service (dates), status (full-time etc.) including hours worked per year, and a detailed account of your duties during your employment.

NB - If you were self-employed, or if your previous employer no longer exists, you will be required to create a notarized affidavit stating length of service, status (including hours worked per year, and detailed account of your duties during employment.  Supporting documents, such as T4 slips, Record of Employment etc. may be helpful.
