Carepath - Cancer Assistance Program for Members

Cancer Assistance Program for Members
CAREpath is a Canadian organization founded by leading oncologists and cancer nurses who have dedicated their careers to helping Canadians with cancer.  The Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP) and CAREpath have partnered to provide CAREpath’s Cancer Navigation SystemTM to help support Ontario’s educators and their families through the burden of cancer.

The CAREpath Cancer Navigation System consists of one-on-one telephonic counseling and support by your personal Cancer Nurse, backed by leading CAREpath oncologists.  Your CAREpath nurse works with you and your doctor to ensure all of your emotional, medical and treatment needs are met.  Your personal CAREpath oncology nurse can provide:

  • Emotional support for you and your family
  • Explanations of your tests and treatments
  • Questions to ask on your first and subsequent visits to your oncologist
  • Advice and support through all treatment phases
  • Information on how to access other support services if necessary
  • Guidance to alternate treatment locations if required or requested
  • Specialized advice and support on how to reduce risk of a recurrence or new cancer
After treatment is completed, advice on reducing delayed effects of treatment, and dealing with other issues you may face as a cancer survivor.

The CAREpath Navigation System is now a valuable part of our Long Term Disability (LTD) coverage.  You do not need to submit a disability claim or be off work to use CAREpath services.  Complete confidentiality is assured: no personal or medical information is shared with OTIP, your School Board, or your Union.

If you, your spouse or dependant child have recently been diagnosed with cancer, or a cancer recurrence, call CAREpath at 1-800-290-5106.  You can also obtain more information by accessing the CAREpath web site or by contacting the District Office.

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), a not-for-profit alliance of 21 of the world’s leading cancer centers, is dedicated to improving the quality and effectiveness of care provided to patients with cancer. Although NCCN is an American organization, their website provides valuable information regarding cancer and treatment options.  Visit their website to view this information.
